One Brand. Four Markets. One Connected Digital Experience.
Overview
CIC Insurance Group is a leading African insurance and financial services organisation with more than five decades of experience.
From its origins as an insurance agency within the Kenya National Federation of Co-operatives in 1968, CIC has grown into a regional financial services group with operations across Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan and Malawi. Its portfolio spans general insurance, life assurance, asset management, pensions and a broad range of personal, business and cooperative solutions.
Clever was tasked with developing the digital presence for the Group and its regional operations — creating a connected ecosystem comprising:
CIC Group
CIC Kenya
CIC Uganda
CIC South Sudan
CIC Malawi
The challenge was to establish a consistent CIC digital experience across markets while giving each country the flexibility to communicate its own products, services, content and customer needs.

The Challenge
A regional financial services organisation has a difficult digital problem.
The brand needs to feel consistent everywhere, but the business cannot operate identically everywhere.
CIC’s markets have different product portfolios, customer requirements, regulatory environments, contact information and operational structures.
For example, the Kenya website spans more than 125 products across individual, corporate, business and cooperative solutions, alongside life assurance and asset management services.
Uganda, South Sudan and Malawi have their own market-specific product offerings and customer journeys. The Uganda website, for example, presents products including motor, domestic and travel insurance alongside savings and education solutions. Malawi similarly provides market-specific insurance products and customer services.
The digital challenge was therefore twofold:
How do you create one CIC experience without making every market identical?
And:
How do you make a complex financial services portfolio easy for customers to navigate?
The Approach
We approached the project as a connected digital ecosystem, rather than a collection of independent websites.
The Group website establishes the overarching CIC story, corporate identity, regional presence, leadership, financial information and institutional positioning.
The country platforms then extend that experience into local markets.
The underlying principle was:
One brand → Multiple markets → Localised experiences
This allowed CIC to maintain a consistent digital identity while giving individual markets the flexibility to present the products, services and customer journeys relevant to their audiences.
The Solution
A regional digital ecosystem
We developed a connected suite of digital experiences spanning four markets.
At the centre is the CIC Group website, which provides the corporate layer of the ecosystem.
Around it sit the market-specific platforms:
- CIC Kenya
- CIC Uganda
- CIC South Sudan
- CIC Malawi
The Group platform communicates the wider organisation and its regional footprint, while the country platforms focus on the practical needs of customers within each market. The Group website itself provides direct pathways into the Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan and Malawi websites.
This creates a clear relationship between the corporate brand and its operating markets.
One Brand, Localised for Each Market
Consistency was important.
But consistency did not mean cloning the same website four times.
Each market needed to retain its own identity within the broader CIC framework.
The Kenya platform, for example, presents a broad portfolio of insurance, investment, savings and retirement products.
Uganda presents a different combination of insurance and financial solutions relevant to its market.
Malawi similarly provides locally relevant products and customer services, including motor insurance, marine, fire and funeral products.
The result is a shared digital language with market-specific content.
Making Insurance Easier to Navigate
Insurance and financial services can be difficult to understand.
CIC’s product ecosystem includes everything from motor and domestic insurance to health, life protection, agriculture, professional indemnity, pensions, investments and savings solutions.
Rather than presenting this as one overwhelming product catalogue, the websites organise products around customer needs.
The Kenya platform, for example, structures personal solutions around themes such as:
Protect your valuables
Plan & grow your money
Protect your loved ones
This gives customers a more intuitive starting point than requiring them to understand CIC’s internal business structure first.
The customer begins with a need.
The platform then guides them towards a solution.
From Product Discovery to Action
The websites are designed not only to explain CIC’s products, but to help customers take the next step.
Depending on the market and product, customers can access pathways to:
- Get a quote.
- Buy or enquire about a product.
- Make a claim.
- Contact CIC.
- Access forms and product documents.
- Find service providers.
- Find branches.
- Connect with customer support.
The Kenya website, for example, provides direct customer journeys around getting quotes, health insurance, education savings, retirement planning and other financial needs.
This shifts the websites from being purely informational corporate properties towards digital service platforms.
A Connected Customer Support Experience
Insurance relationships don’t end when a customer purchases a policy.
Customers may need to make claims, find approved medical providers, locate garages, access documents or contact an advisor.
The CIC Kenya Help Centre provides access to product documents, medical service providers, payment information and other customer resources.
The country platforms also provide contact and support pathways, including WhatsApp, telephone and email channels.
This creates a broader digital support ecosystem around the customer lifecycle.
A Strong Corporate Layer
While the country sites focus on customer needs, the Group website provides the institutional layer.
It communicates CIC’s history, leadership, regional footprint, corporate commitment, awards and financial scale.
CIC’s history spans from its establishment within the cooperative movement in 1968 through its transformation into a publicly listed regional financial services group. Its regional expansion included South Sudan in 2013 and Uganda and Malawi in 2014.
The Group website gives that history a central digital home.
This is particularly important for investors, partners, regulators, prospective employees and other institutional stakeholders who need to understand CIC beyond its individual insurance products.
Regional Expansion, Digitally Reflected
The digital ecosystem mirrors CIC’s regional growth.
Rather than treating each country as an isolated digital property, the architecture establishes a relationship between the Group and its operating markets.
This allows CIC to communicate a single regional story while retaining local relevance.
The Group’s contact experience, for example, provides dedicated information for Kenya, South Sudan, Uganda and Malawi.
The architecture therefore reflects the actual business:
Regional at the top.
Local where it matters.
A Platform Built to Evolve
Insurance businesses are constantly changing.
New products are introduced. Existing products evolve. Regulations change. Campaigns come and go. Customer expectations shift.
A static corporate website would quickly become a liability.
The CIC platform was therefore developed as a flexible content ecosystem that allows market teams to update products, campaigns, news, resources, leadership information and customer-facing content without rebuilding the underlying experience.
This gives the Group and its country operations the ability to evolve their digital presence alongside the business.
The Technology
WordPress
WordPress provides the content management foundation across the CIC digital ecosystem, giving the Group and its markets flexibility to manage a broad range of corporate, product and customer-facing content.
Multi-Site Digital Architecture
The ecosystem connects five digital properties while maintaining clear separation between the Group and country-level experiences.
Shared Brand Framework
A consistent visual and interaction language creates continuity across the CIC ecosystem while allowing individual markets to maintain locally relevant content.
Market-Specific Content Architecture
Each country platform is structured around its own products, services, customer journeys, contact information and operational requirements.
Product Discovery
Insurance and financial products are organised around customer needs, helping users navigate CIC’s broad portfolio without requiring them to understand the organisation’s internal structure.
Digital Service Journeys
The platforms provide pathways for quotes, claims, customer support, product enquiries, forms, service providers and other practical customer needs.
Scalable Content Platform
The architecture provides CIC with a foundation capable of supporting new products, campaigns, content, services and regional growth.
The Outcome
The result is more than five websites.
It is a connected regional digital ecosystem.
CIC now has a central Group platform that communicates the organisation’s broader story and a series of country-level experiences that translate that story into locally relevant customer journeys.
Customers can explore insurance and financial solutions, get support, access resources and connect with CIC within their respective markets.
The Group can communicate a consistent regional identity without sacrificing local relevance.
And individual country operations have the flexibility to evolve their digital experiences alongside their businesses.

The Clever Take
Building one insurance website is a web project.
Building a digital ecosystem across four countries, multiple business lines and hundreds of products is a different proposition.
For CIC, the challenge was not simply to make five websites look consistent.
It was to make a regional financial services organisation feel like one connected brand while remaining locally relevant.
We built the digital architecture to reflect the way CIC actually operates:
One Group.
Four markets.
Multiple customer journeys.
One connected digital experience.
Because regional scale shouldn’t mean digital fragmentation.
Built by Clever.
