Making Paediatric Healthcare Easier to Navigate

Overview

For parents, finding the right healthcare information should not feel like another problem to solve.

Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital is one of the region’s leading paediatric healthcare providers, with a history dating back to 1947 and a network of 18 medical centres serving families across Kenya and patients referred from neighbouring countries. The hospital provides specialised care for children and young adults across a broad range of medical disciplines.

Clever helped create a digital experience that brings this extensive healthcare ecosystem together — making it easier for parents, patients, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders to find the information and services they need.

The Challenge

Healthcare websites have a unique challenge.

People don’t necessarily visit them because they are browsing.

They visit because they need something.

A parent may need to find a paediatric specialist. Another may need to locate the nearest medical centre. Someone may need to understand how to prepare for a hospital visit. Another visitor may need information about emergency care, insurance, international patient services or a specific medical condition.

Gertrude’s has an extensive healthcare offering, spanning general paediatrics, specialist clinics, surgery, inpatient and outpatient care, rehabilitation, laboratory services, radiology, pharmacy, wellness and emergency care.

The challenge was to organise all of this information into a digital experience that feels simple, reassuring and intuitive.

The website needed to serve:

  • Parents and caregivers.
  • Existing patients.
  • Prospective patients.
  • International patients.
  • Healthcare professionals.
  • Prospective employees.
  • Partners and stakeholders.

The objective was clear:

Make a complex healthcare organisation easier to understand and navigate.

The Approach

We approached the project around the patient and family journey rather than the internal structure of the hospital.

The experience was built around four core stages:

Understand → Find → Prepare → Access Care

Users can begin by understanding the services available, identify the right specialty or care pathway, find an appropriate location and access practical information before their visit.

This creates a more human approach to healthcare navigation.

Instead of asking visitors to understand how the hospital is organised, the digital experience helps them understand what they need and where to go next.

The Solution

A digital front door for paediatric healthcare

The website provides a central digital home for Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital, bringing together its clinical services, locations, patient resources, institutional information and community initiatives.

The homepage immediately establishes the hospital’s core proposition — quality healthcare for children — while providing direct pathways into paediatric specialties, locations and appointment-related journeys.

This gives visitors a clear starting point, regardless of why they have arrived.

Structuring a complex healthcare catalogue

Gertrude’s provides care across more than 27 areas of paediatric specialisation, alongside general healthcare and supporting services.

We structured this breadth into a navigable service architecture.

Visitors can explore specialties including:

  • Respiratory Medicine and Allergy Care
  • Paediatric Nephrology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Audiology
  • ENT
  • Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgery
  • Ophthalmology
  • Dermatology
  • Psychiatry
  • Neonatology
  • Nutrition
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Developmental Paediatrics

The platform also separates general services such as outpatient care, inpatient care, wellness, surgery, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, rehabilitation and emergency services.

The result is an extensive healthcare catalogue that remains approachable rather than overwhelming.

Designed around the parent journey

Healthcare information is only useful if people can understand what to do with it.

The platform incorporates practical patient guidance, including information around preparing for visits, registration, triage, consultation, billing and insurance, laboratory and radiology services, pharmacy and follow-up care.

For emergency care, the website provides a clear journey explaining what happens from arrival and triage through examination and potential admission.

This type of content turns the website into more than an information repository.

It becomes a pre-visit companion for families.

Bringing care closer to families

Gertrude’s operates a network of medical centres designed to make paediatric healthcare more accessible.

The website provides dedicated location experiences, allowing visitors to explore the hospital’s network and identify a medical centre relevant to them. The hospital currently describes its network as 18 outpatient medical centres, with its main Muthaiga facility providing 24-hour care.

This creates a direct connection between the digital experience and the physical healthcare network.

For a family looking for care, the question isn’t simply:

“What services do you provide?”

It is also:

“Where can I get them?”

The platform is designed to answer both.

Making specialist care discoverable

Specialised healthcare can be difficult for non-medical audiences to navigate.

The platform therefore provides dedicated pages for individual specialties, giving visitors a clearer understanding of the available services and creating pathways into deeper information.

This is particularly important for families seeking specialist treatment or referrals.

Gertrude’s provides specialised inpatient services including paediatric critical care, oncology, bone marrow transplantation and other advanced services, making clear digital organisation particularly important.

Supporting international patients

Gertrude’s also serves patients referred from across East Africa and beyond.

The website provides a dedicated international patient experience covering specialised inpatient and outpatient care, referral pathways and services including surgical care, critical care, oncology, neonatal care, bone marrow transplantation and dialysis.

This creates a dedicated digital pathway for families who may be navigating the hospital from outside Kenya.

Trust through evidence and experience

In healthcare, trust is part of the user experience.

The website communicates Gertrude’s history, quality standards, clinical expertise, patient stories, affiliations and institutional credentials.

The hospital identifies itself as a not-for-profit organisation established in 1947 and highlights its quality and patient safety programme, including Joint Commission International accreditation.

Patient stories provide another layer of reassurance by allowing prospective families to hear from people who have experienced the hospital’s care.

The result is a digital experience designed not only to inform, but to build confidence.

A knowledge resource for parents

The relationship between a healthcare provider and a family doesn’t begin when the patient enters the hospital.

Gertrude’s uses its website to provide educational content and resources for parents, including guidance around new parenting, first aid and preparing for hospital visits.

This creates an ongoing content relationship with families and positions the website as a useful resource beyond individual appointments.

Connecting healthcare with community impact

Gertrude’s identity extends beyond clinical care.

Through the Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation, the organisation supports children from less privileged families, specialised services, professional training and improvements in paediatric care across sub-Saharan Africa.

The website gives this wider mission a digital presence, allowing visitors to understand the organisation’s social impact alongside its clinical offering.

The Technology

WordPress

WordPress provides the content management foundation for the Gertrude’s digital experience, allowing the hospital’s teams to manage and continuously update a large volume of healthcare, institutional and educational content.

Healthcare Information Architecture

The platform organises a complex catalogue of specialties, general services, patient resources and locations into a structure designed around user needs.

Patient Journey Content

Key healthcare journeys are translated into accessible digital content, helping families understand what to expect before, during and after their interaction with the hospital.

Location Discovery

The platform connects patients to Gertrude’s network of medical centres, helping them move from digital discovery to physical care.

Content & Education

The website provides a publishing environment for health education, patient resources, hospital news and community stories.

Scalable Digital Platform

The architecture allows Gertrude’s to continue expanding its services, locations, specialties, resources and organisational content without requiring a fundamental rebuild of its digital foundation.

The Outcome

The result is a digital experience designed around one of the most important questions a healthcare website can answer:

“What do I need to do next?”

Parents can explore medical specialties, understand services, find locations, prepare for visits and access educational resources.

Patients can find practical information around their care journey.

International families can access dedicated information about specialised care.

Healthcare professionals, prospective employees and other stakeholders can explore the wider organisation.

The website brings all of these journeys together while keeping the experience centred on the needs of children and their families.

The Clever Take

Healthcare is complex.

The digital experience shouldn’t be.

For Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital, the challenge was to translate decades of paediatric expertise, a broad specialist offering and a nationwide healthcare network into an experience that parents and families can navigate with confidence.

We built a platform where information leads to understanding, understanding leads to action, and action leads to care.

Because when a parent comes looking for answers, the website shouldn’t give them another maze to navigate.

It should show them the way forward.
